Manager's Reception and Artisan Show

PAINTINGS, MOTORCYCLES, POTTERY & SILVER SADDLES

TO HIGHLIGHT ARTS SHOW AND SALE THIS WEEKEND

 By, Chatzie Reynolds

The Second Art and Artisans’ Show will take place Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, in conjunction with the Manager’s Reception hosted by Steve Plummer, at the Inn from 5pm -8pm. Beth & Sandy Baldwin and Charlotte Reynolds are arranging the show.

The show’s purpose is to showcase some of the artists working in Alleghany County or adjacent counties and to make work available for sale. Further, many of the artists you will meet maintain studios or showrooms nearby to the Club which can make appealing destinations for day trips, foggy days and houseguest jaunts. Come by to see noteworthy original work at prices from $10 to $50,000.

Robin Hanes, an RGC member and an established artist who exhibits at the prestigious Gallery C in Raleigh, will show painting and giclee prints, including a series on small animals.  Tory Casey of Surry County will return with her colorful folk art paintings.  Steve Dudley and Mike Phillips from Grandur Manufacturing in Jonesville will bring two custom hand painted and custom built motorcycles; they are leading motorcycle customizers on the East coast and specialize in wild one-of-a-kind bikes. Ceramic pottery is represented by Rob & Bet Mangum and by Robin & Dan Cater. Dan is the son of RGC member Anne Leonard and Robin is the sister of Dawn Motsinger.  Phil & Eddie Harris of State Road are showing their silver-encrusted, hand-tooled Western saddles and bridles, in addition to handmade silver belt buckles, bolo ties and silver jewelry. They are internationally prominent for their fine craftsmanship. There will be  handmade quilts, Nantucket-style baskets woven by Julie Ottesen, wrought iron in  plant baskets, hooks, and fireplace tools , cutout steel silhouettes for patio walls or indoors. Erik Dahlager will show his photography in the gumoil printing process.  Ronnie Hughes of Sparta, a Piedmont Craftsmen member, shows delicate flowers captured in glass and other hand-blown figures.  Ruth Hutton is a wool spinner, fiber artist and weaver from Elkin who was formerly the chief designer for Chatham Manufacturing. She makes extraordinary handbags and sculptures in wool felt; in addition she weaves shawls, sweaters and throws from hand dyed wool.  Ruth’s participation brings us at Roaring Gap full circle to our original founder Hugh Chatham, who discovered this extraordinary mountaintop mesa as he went by horseback on his wool-purchasing expeditions. She will bring a spinning wheel, loom, and wool with her and can do some demonstration.
